Here are my top 10 must have items in order to get the rodeo queen hair of your dreams! Wanting to learn how to do rodeo queen hair? Check out the Rodeo Queen Hair How-to post for links to videos of multiple Miss Rodeo’s showing how they get their perfect Rodeo Queen hair.

  1. Tease Powder and Comb

Rodeo Queens are all about the big hair. While it may be tame compared to the standard rodeo queen hair of the past, the basic requirement is to have full looking hair and wings whether its curled, straight, short or in a braid. One of the easiest ways to get great looking wings that last is to use a teasing powder. My favorite is big sexy hair powder play. Along with teasing powder, a crucial item for every rodeo queens hair kit is a teasing comb. For my fine hair I have found all plastic bristles like this Conair one give the best tease close to the roots. But I also recommend trying a bristle style like this from Drybar, and choose what ever tease comb works best for your hair type.

  2. Brush and Pick

Lots of hair at a rodeo performance on the back of a horse can also come with lots of tangles, a great brush like this one from Wet Brush will keep your hair healthy and make getting tangles out a breeze. As well as a way to refresh falling out hair or smooth straight styles.

  3. baseball Hat

An essential to making sure your wings are even and be able to protect your expensive felt hats from hairspray and other products. They also are great for after a rodeo when you want to take off your hat but not have your hair look crazy. My preference is to wear a cap displaying a rodeo sponsor or represent the rodeo queen organization you are in, Like these from Miss Rodeo America.

  4. Hairspray

There is a saying that Rodeo Queens keep hairspray companies in business. But not all hairspray is created equal. Depending on your hair type and the weather, a light or heavy hold hairspray may be in order. Tried and true rodeo queen favorites include using Dove Non-Aerosol Hairspray prior to curling and finishing with Freeze it Mega Freeze Hairspray.

  5. Bobby Pins

A must have in every rodeo queen bag. Not only are bobby pins great for pinning the top of your hair back to keep it out of the way of your wings, but they are also used to keep your hat on while on horseback. I prefer smooth style bobby pins like these curved ones from Conair. I also highly recommend finding 3 inch smooth bobby pins for pinning your hat in place. The reason you want longer bobby pins like these, are because it lets the points of the bobby pin lay in the crown of your hat and not against your head (no pain, yay) plus they don’t budge the entire night. I only need a couple of these, usually two on each side and one in the back. The one time I ate dirt at a rodeo my hat didn’t budge and I owe it all to long bobby pins!

  6. Extensions

Do you have to have long, thick hair to be a rodeo queen? Absolutely not! However, if you have difficult to curl, short or thin hair, adding extensions is an easy way to reach your rodeo queen hair dreams without causing excessive damage to your own hair. My own hair does not hold a curl and is on the thin side so I personally use the Halo from Zala Hair. I have found that adding extensions helps keep the curl of my own hair and I highly recommend trying extensions, just keep in mind that your hat size may change depending on how much hair you add. (My header pic for this site is the Zala Halo in Champagne Blonde, I got the 20” and had my hairdresser cut it down)

If your interested in trying Zala Hair, use my link to get $15 off your first purchase.

  7. Curling Wand or Iron

What curling iron or wand you use comes entirely to personal preference and your hair type. I recommend using what you already have and practicing your queen hair to see what works for you. You can try a standard curling iron, wand or even a flat iron to curl your hair. However, if you are in need of a new purchase I highly recommend the Remington Tapered Curling Wand it is inexpensive tool you can find at your local Walmart, plus its the one current Miss Rodeo America Jordan Tierney uses!

  8. Blow Dryer

While not required, a blow dryer can make creating wings a breeze and it is also crucial to make sure your hair is 100% dry before curling. An expensive blow dryer is definitely not required, but I do recommend having one that has a concentration attachment like this Revlon one.

  9. Earrings

The perfect accessory to pull attention to your beautiful face and hair is adding earrings. For rodeo queens, this can be the perfect way to complement your outfit by coordinating colors, show off sponsors like Montana Silversmith . Another really popular choice among rodeo queens is Rhinestone Lipgloss, a very lightweight earring that stays on, can be color matched to outfits, plus they can make clip on versions of their popular styles like the petite teardrops.

  10. Cowboy Hat

The cherry on top of your perfect rodeo queen hair is a clean, nicely shaped hat. Typically Rodeo Queens only wear felt hats, but if your a beginner rider especially on the younger side consider wearing a helmet, it may not be standard but safety should be the top priority. A white hat is a classic for a rodeo queen, whether its a custom Greely or a more budget friendly option like the Resistol Pageant Hat.
